You have given me a lot to think about. I look forward to reading more of your stuff.

One question I have is what responsibilities do people outside of a community have when injustice is happening in a community that they are not part of?

For example, Wisconsin takes a very hands-off approach to the Amish but their strict religious codes lock women into seemingly oppressive gender roles. I can only assume that gay people in Amish communities have it hard too. Wisconsin is essentially saying “none of our business.” Tennessee is enacting anti-drag laws and Florida is saying “don’t say gay.” Those are states doing states-rights things. Is that none of my business? Do I have any responsibility to oppose them if I don’t live in those communities?

I could see a libertarian world where communities get to set their own standards without any check at all from the federal government. Likely people would self-sort as they are able and move out of states that don’t respect their rights. But I would be concerned about the people who can’t afford to self sort or for whom there is no viable community to go to.

I think we need a floor of basic rights at the federal level and then it can go up from there in individual communities/states.
