Yes and part of the problem is that we train them that way with grades and tests (although I think it is also just part of growing up). When someone asks "Is this going to be on the test?" "DO I get graded on this?" both of those questions ensure that they pay attention and want to get the right answer. Open ended conversations that don't have a single answer and aren't on the test are the opposite.
