A New Year is upon us, and many of us are taking stock of where we want our lives to go in the next year. Some of us are even resolving to make changes. As a suggestion, I humbly propose that you consider joining a team of Morris dancers, and specifically, I invite you to join a Border Morris side. Think about it.

What is Morris Dancing, you might ask…

Morris is a traditional folk dance, originating in England, where dancers perform coordinated movements to tunes played on fiddles, flutes, and other instruments. Often these movements involve the clashing of sticks or the snapping of a handkerchief. Dancers traditionally wear bells and special costumes.

Morris dancing has a long tradition, going back to Medieval times, and you can find dancers marking holidays like St. George’s Day, May Day, solstices, and New Year’s Day, as well as at birthdays, farmers markets, local parades, Pride celebrations, weddings, and more.

There are teams all over England, as well as scattered throughout the world, including our own team right here in Western Wisconsin called “General Hardware Border Morris.”

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
