to be a little more specific I find that identity is a box that is offered to us as children. As a cis white boy I had a big box full of opportunities, but it is still a box with defined roles and actions that are sanctioned and that are not allowed. When superheroes and fantasy characters stretch those boundaries it breaks the walls of the box. In fact that is the work of fiction. When anyone is boxed in by an identity, that affects me. It is like how enforcement of homophobic norms on other men limits my own box of what maleness could look like. My liberation in terms of class and expression and sexuality are all tied up with the liberation of people who do not share my own identities. Thanks for this piece.

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
