Thanks for this piece. I teach for a Montessori school in Minneapolis that tries to be what you call a “good diverse” school but in reality the dominant culture in the school is whiteness. It is a huge focus for us to try to decenter whiteness. Your story reinforced my resolve to continue to push for this. Ironically as students get older we tend lose Black Brown and Indigenous kids, even as we want to keep them so we can reach a tipping point where we are truly a diverse school. But I can’t blame them because as we go up the grades white students are a higher percentage. It is a chicken and egg thing I suppose. But there is more we can do as a staff. I know.
