Thanks for this piece. My Minnesota school does a trip to Mississippi and we include the Whitney Plantation. This is seventh and eighth graders. We prep the kids and allow them to opt out. There is a fine line between necessary history that awakens the mind and heart to injustice and trauma inducing experience. And it is personal for each person. I want the white kids to feel angry and guilty. I think the Black kids would benefit from having their own tour with a Black guide. We are an all white teaching staff but we flew a Black admin staff person down for the tour. It made a difference. Thanks for your story.
