Thank you for this essay. I have often wondered why people in the USA have a tipping culture while other countries do not. I never considered that it might be a legacy of slavery, and that is probably because I am white. I remembered smiling my own way through middle school because I was a new kid in 7th grade and wanted people to like me. I had to learn not to smile all the time because it was so automatic. Yes. We need to normalize not needing to smile in the service industry or otherwise.
