Thank you for reading and responding. I was thinking today about your comment and I may need to add an edit. I wanted Warren for President and I think Trump did her wrong by weaponizing Warren's mishandling of the DNA question by calling her Pocahontas.
I think the point I am coming to is that I feel like what happened to Warren could have happened to 90% or more of the white people who have family stories of Native ancestors. Warren's reaction to finding out she does indeed likely have Native ancestry is common and it includes me. It surprised me (but shouldn't have) to find out how much Dr Tallbear does not agree with Warren and other white people who want to claim some piece of Native identity.
Dr Tallbear's concept of identity is so different from the way I grew up thinking that I am still digesting it. I think Warren is an amazing person and would have been the president we needed, and yet I trust Dr. Tallbear on this one.
I agree that we could all learn something about belonging from Native people.
