Sometimes when I write a story, I discover things along the way. I would never have picked up on the connection between abusive men operating in a sort of fog of entitlement and white people being clueless about race if I were not in the process of writing this essay. Sometimes I think all the oppressions are interconnected and if we could really dismantle racism, it would undermine sexism, homophobia, xenophobia, and more. This is what the people in power fear. None of it can be dismantled if we can’t even see whiteness.

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
