Interesting point. By making people who are born in the United States automatically citizens, it meant immigrants' children could gain full rights and privileges. Also, at the time, there were no limits to immigration for Europeans, so it was as easy as getting on a boat.

It is a lot different now. And people who are undocumented could live in a state of permanent limbo.
