If caste is hereditary, then perhaps what immigrants are going for is either "passing" as another caste or "proximity." In either case it gives them safety and opportunity but the tax it exacts is that they have to "out-white" the whites/men/straights. I think about Ted Cruz. For LGBTQ+ they might go after hyper masculine or feminine norms to assimilate to straight. For women, they might be forced to be hard and inflexible to justify a position of power. But if caste is immovable, then they get caught in a trap. This is the condition for Jewish people who will always have to have an extra layer of vigilance. This is why we need to smash the caste system, because no one is safe. Even the straight white males often have some sub-caste shit that makes them feel unsafe - some of that is proximity because if we act a certain way we might get the stain of effeminate or gay, and if we have a certain job we might not have the cred we need to feel safe. I suppose this is why representation in media matters for all the castes, because we need to put to lie any hint that there is superiority of one caste over another.
