I would like to say that I would use my white male privilege to intervene, but I have never stopped to witness when I see police stop someone. So I don't know. I keep driving. I can't say that I would risk my life. Part of living in a rural place is the only police I see are on the side of the road stopping speeders. I've never even considered stopping when I see someone else pulled over.

In your scenario, the person is being beaten in front of me, but I don't know if I would even see it. When I see police on the side of the road, I drive by quickly without looking - just glad it is not me pulled over. Since George Floyd, I admit that I do look more than I used to. I am aware of police violence. But I have never (that I know of) been in a situation that warranted stopping.

I think I am still stuck in a "the police are here to protect and serve" mindset, and I unconsciously assume all police violence is the result of bad cops.

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
