I will definitely check both essays out. I don’t claim white out of any sort of pride. Just that in this society people see me as white whether I identify as white or not. I need to see what it means to be labeled white and what gets put on me because of that.

In terms of identifying as a racist, I think I am a person who sometimes is unawarely racist. I have done and sais racist things in the past. I was raised in a subtly racist social milieu. Not overt in your face racism. Anyway - as a person I have also done and said anti racist things. I’m not a racist nor am I an anti racist. I’m a person who keeps deciding to be anti racist and sometimes fails. I like Kendi’s book where he uses himself as an example of a person who has done racist things without meaning to. He refers to a speech he gave in high school, which now seems racist to him. I think we need to take some of the charge out of the word “racist” because we will never learn or change if we can’t talk about mistakes people make.

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
