I remember my teenage years as trying to make sense of the world. I got straight As and paid attention. I wanted to know what capitalism and communism were. I wanted to understand who the bad guys were. I latched onto Earth First!, a radical environmental group that told me that the bad guys were cutting down the old growth forests. What they had was a simple story that made sense. As an adult, I now teach Montessori middle school and see that craving for a simple story. Maturity comes from seeing nuance and understanding all sides of an issue, but the simple binary story is so seductive.
