I have been thinking about repairing things as a key skill. When Cuba was faced with the "hungry years" in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union, they had to repair and keep using everything. During both of the world wars, Germans gained a reputation for figuring out ways to keep machinery going (it was called "Jerry-rigging). When he was alive, my elderly farmer friend who grew up in the great depression could fix anything and make anything.

We will need those types of skills. Blacksmithing, welding, industrial recycling, sewing, shoe repair, canning, etc. But more importantly, we will need the social structures that go along with those skills because those skill sets require a robust interconnected community.

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
