Great analysis. I write a monthly genealogy column and my own similar pretendian story was one of my first essays. I mourned the loss of my fake identity but it helped me hold up a mirror to myself and to my white identity and launch me in a path of self reflection. Have you seen Rutherford Falls? I think their humor gets at this touchy subject really well.
