Middle of summer farming

This is the week to give people a farm tour. The crops are weeded and mulched. The plants look healthy. The tomatoes are tied up. The cover crops are thriving. The bees are happy. The tractors are all in working order. Happy children got to walk the llamas.

It was a lot of work to get to this point, and I don’t intend for us to rest on our laurels, but it is nice to take a moment to be pleased with the progress of the farm. Because we are caught up, we indulged in a few bonus projects this week with the students. The students washed the walls of the barn and the coop and gave them a fresh coat of paint. We mapped out and mowed a new labyrinth for the prairie by the school. We walked the trails and checked the sign numbers to verify that they match the map. We went to a nearby lake to go swimming and grill out.

The good life.

The cup plant is blooming in my front yard.
The butternut trees are loaded with nuts this year
Almost stepped on this one
Fall broccoli family crops are in and watered. Leeks are mulched.
Potatoes got extra bonus mulch this week
The Three Sisters garden is thriving
Fall sweet corn is in watered
Bumblebee and a honeybee sharing a flower
Cucumbers on the deck about to make fruit
Happy tomato plants!

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
