It has been a while

This May and June we took on a major project. We built an 8 foot tall wire fence around 3 acres of gardens. There are 106 wooden posts, each dug 4 feet into the ground, and 1700 feet of wire fencing.

Building the fence took more effort and strength than I had, so I had to find help and build literal muscles.

The fence is our best shot at growing crops like we used to. Even five years ago we could grow pumpkins, beans, kale, broccoli, and corn without deer eating them all. But last year was so bad for deer! 90% loss in pumpkins and total losses for corn and beans. So we made the effort.

This year we also have a thriving seed library garden and a solid three sisters garden. We also planted 700 cabbages for the food shelf and have delivered over 1000 pounds of cabbage so far.

In animal news, our beloved chicken Polly was attacked and killed by a predator. After that we locked all the chickens in for a few days and wrapped the electric fence around the coop. No more chickens dead since then.
