When I taught at a private school in the Bay Area, about half of my students’ parents were linked to tech. We did an Introduction to Chemistry class by focusing on the chemistry of carbon and how it is linked to the climate crisis. One student cheerfully told me that technology will fix the crisis. My response was to say that I wish that were true, but I didn’t think this was a problem that new technology will fix.

I think we have all the technology right now that we need, but what we lack is the political movement to make the changes. This is a social, economic, and political problem, not just a tech one.

As a counterpoint, Medium writer Will Lockett is my optimistic student, all grown up. He writes about the new technology that can make a difference. I love it.

Perhaps we need both. I will keep working on the social/political change, and Will can keep on researching the next big thing. How are you fighting?

To live in a world of peace and justice we must imagine it first. For this, we need artists and writers. I write to reach for the edges of what is possible.
