Climate Minute: How to be a Climate Prepper
Guns. Lots of guns.
JUST KIDDING! Maybe just a few hunting rifles.
The woman working next to me at the election told me she considers herself a “prepper.” Her eyes lit up when I said I was a farmer. She wanted to know what I thought about the coming food shortages.
Preppers are people who are preparing for catastrophe. Usually, they run to the Libertarian side and they stockpile food, fuel, and ammunition for when and if the system breaks down. As a rule, they don’t trust the government, like my new friend.
It got me thinking. As a climate crisis realist, I am also acutely aware of the shortcomings of our systems and governments. However, I don’t think stockpiling guns and ammo is going to provide us the resilience people need.
What do you think a “climate prepper” should do?
Here is one idea: I have been involved for years with a group called the Hay River Transition Initiative, which is modeled on the Transition Town movement. Collectively we have a lot to offer each other, and we set up specific times to share skills and resources.
